With the reinvigorated garden movement sweeping across the nation, Carpenter’s Shelter wants to join in by starting a garden with fresh fruits and vegetables for our residents. We hope to turn an unused space in our courtyard into a bustling garden, which will empower volunteers to expand their use of produce in their meals for the shelter. Carpenter’s Shelter serves over 1,000 homeless and formerly homeless individuals every year by providing shelter, guidance, education and advocacy for homeless individuals and families who seek sustainable independence and stability. Our volunteers are responsible for providing, preparing, serving, and cleaning-up 16 meals per week. Having this garden would benefit everyone at Carpenter’s Shelter because it would give the volunteers easy access to produce for their meals and it would give the residents a chance to try and add a variety of healthy fruits and vegetables into their diets!
The $500 grant, use of tools and 50 volunteers will ensure our project’s success! We would use the $500 grant to buy materials for constructing the raised beds, soil, seeds and plants. We would use the tools provided by Volunteer Fairfax to prepare the space for the garden, construction of the raised beds and general beautification of our outdoor space. The 50 volunteers would be the final step to getting our garden ready to grow! We would use their help with cleaning and preparing the space, building the beds and helping with beautification of Carpenter Shelter outdoor space.
